Carian Coast
If these local sites excite a passion
for the ancient world, the road south
leads to Stratoniceia and the romantic
seaside ruins of Cnidus and Caunus. At
Caunus, as well as cliffs carved with
temple tombs and an ancient theatre
seemingly designed for watching sunsets,
the strand of white sand at the end of
the river is a breeding ground for
Loggerhead Turtles. Boat trips can be
arranged. Whichever time of year
you visit, the river teems with
wild-life – terrapins, frogs, tortoises
and ducks with the odd blue flash and
insistent high call of a kingfisher. The
banks are lined with restaurants, some
of which specialise in the delicious
grey mullet that migrate between the sea
and nearby Koycegiz Lake. |
